"All Profits to NtL ?"

I hate all this politics stuff, but a word of warning.....
A charity recently received a complaint, not with regard to anything involving our Club I hasten to add, from someone who had donated a substantial amount of money at an event.
They were told any money they donated was raised on behalf that of the Charity but after the event found that some of the money raised was used for a different purpose. What it was used for is irrelevant, however the organisation is accused of raising money under false pretences and if the matter is taken to court they will quite possibly be found guilty of deception and/or fraud as the organisation's posters, banners and verbal sales pitch were quite specific.
So beware, if you wish to raise money to buy some kit; timing lights or whatever, you must state quite clearly that that is what you intend to do with the money, adding after “with any profits donated to So-and-so-charity”. You must not use the charity name in the first instance to ‘open wallets’.
Raising money for So-and-so-charity and then using some of it to buy your timing lights or for any other purpose is fraudulently depriving that charity of the money generously given to it in their name. Having raised it in their name, it is their money NOT yours.
Likewise, if you state “all profits” or “profits” or “proceeds” it must be that, not less an amount for luck, or your time, or to keep the account open, or for any other notional reason. The costs can only relate to the ‘demonstrable’ costs incurred as a result of the fundraising exercise itself.

April was a bumper month for donations

An update from one of our members who took part in the London Marathon
Matthew Plummer, known to some as Bionic Matty P took part with the Banana Army, the LRF team. He had trained for around 6 months for the event and was aiming to finish in 3 hours 45 minutes. Matthew started well and wasn't having any problems, until he got to mile 4 where he was involved in a collision with two other people. He waited to check that they were alright, losing valuable time, before continuing on his way. The delay meant that he got to the finish line after 4 hours and 20 minutes. A bit longer than planned, but still an admirable time.
It was only the next day, that Matthew decided he ought to get his foot checked out, as it felt particularly sore. A quick x-ray later and the doctor confirmed that he has broken his right foot. I couldn't run 20+ miles at all, but for someone to do it with a broken foot is truly an impressive achievement - well done Matthew!
If you are as impressed as I am about his dedication then it isn't too late to sponsor Matthew. His Justgiving page can be found at: http://www.justgiving.com/mattyp100years.

A breakthrough study of identical twins has for the first time confirmed the existence of cancer stem cells that cause the most common form of childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) – backing evidence that this childhood cancer starts in the womb. The research should lead to less aggressive treatment for childhood ALL and provides the hope of new, more effective drugs.

Latest Update - £3039 so far...
Postal sales of the 50th event raffle tickets are now closed. However, don't worry, as you will still be able to purchase your tickets at the 50th event at the Showground.
The most recent update from Leukaemia Research indicates that 564 books have now been sold. This is still a long way from the target that the organisers have set - to sell 2000 books, so make sure you bring your pennies with you to the 50th and make sure you are in with a chance of winning the excellent prizes!

Target – to raise £10,000 for NtL.
Just a reminder that if you haven’t already done so, get those stubs in. To date 3,400 books have been sent out and only 160 books have been sold, so there is still a very long way to go. Come on, it only takes a minute to fill in the stubs and fill in the cheque and send them off… If you don’t enter, then you will be missing out on the chance of an original 50 years of the 7 framed painting by Brian Ramsey; a track day to the value of £150; half hood by Soft Bits for 7s and a car valet set!
The closing date is the 25th August, so time is fast running out – ensure you send your stubs and cheques soon to Leukaemia Research, Great Ormond Street, London, WC1N 3JJ
Further tickets can be obtained from Linda Bridges, 25 Drayton Wood Road, Norwich, NR6 5BY or via email at
The winning tickets will be drawn on Saturday 15th September at the Celebration Party at the Showground in Norfolk.

Richard Gordon
We would like to send sympathies and best wishes to the family of Richard Gordon who lost his battle against Leukaemia on 23rd December 2006.
Many of you will remember Richard as the driver for Beryl, driving her around the country to club events. He had been co-opted into club life by his brother, club member David Gordon, who along with wife Diana, sold an enviable amount of raffle tickets for the Car the Club Built project back in 97/98 to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the 7.

As you will see if you look at the Nuke the Leuk page, there will be no more Nokia logos from Chris Mintoft!
A sad day indeed. Chris says “The software I use to send the logos has moved on and has mucked up the formatting of the logos I am sending. The demand has tailed right off with the advent of phones with proper images as wallpaper so I think it is time to call it a day for the Nokia Logos.”
I am sure everyone will join me in thanking Chris for his efforts over the years, not just for the considerable amount of money raised for NtL but for the enrichment to our 7 lives the logos brought to those who have them.
I would also like to wish Chris and family all the very best with the new venture that no doubt is consuming much capital so anyone who would like to help please buy one. They are also available for wedding parties etc and corporate events. http://www.SmallClassicCar.co.uk

Many of us will remember the wonderful Alan Fearnley paintings that Chris Rea commissioned of his seven in the early 1990s.

Norman Verona’s Blue Light Show 2005
Norman says ”The total collected for the burgers and drinks was £5,829.50, only a few hundred pounds less than last year. Considering the weather I think that was pretty good.
However this year we had to pay the expenses for the food all totalling £1035.15 but against this was a £2,000 share of the entry tickets for manning the gates and car parks, plus £49.20 interest while the money has been in the savings account.
The show itself raised over £5,000 for ‘Help a Hallam Child’, the main Sheffield children’s charity and a further £2,000 was raised by the invited charities.
Not a bad days work”
Hear, hear Norman! - and it should be noted that Norman and Lynne funded all the pre-event expenses from their own pockets.

It is with deep regret that we extend our deepest sorrow and condolences to Gill, Geoff and Steve for the untimely death of husband and Dad, Keith Pickin, as a result of asbestosis. The last year has been an absolute trial for all of them.
Such was the dedication of the Pickin family though, it was business as usual at club trackdays.
Many of you will know Keith, or will have spoken to or contacted him at club trackdays with Gill or to progress club membership, as Keith’s efforts in the club for club members has been huge; membership secretary duties; assisting Geoff with the organisation and running of Club track days; collecting and administering NtL donations for track day passenger rides. A kind, gentle and humorous man, Keith will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
This is the first death in service of a management team member and a very sad time in the history of the club. Trackday passenger ride donations to NtL will now be referred to as the Keith Pickin Memorial Fund.

Matthew Plummer London Marathon: http://www.justgiving.com/bionicmattyp Matt says:
"The result is that I completed in a time of 4 hours 09 minutes 10 seconds. Very weary and hot! ran the final mile and a half under so much pain I don't want to be in that state again. The weather was against us being a lot hotter than the rain we expected & hoped for. We shall see if we can make it to £2000 when all comes in. Thanks again."
Fantastic result Matt!! The total so far pledged is now over £600 so there is plenty of room for more donations. Come on chaps, do your stuff!
